On Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2016 Bill C-238 - An Act respecting the development of a national strategy for the safe disposal of lamps containing mercury - passed second reading in the House of Commons. This private member's bill (sponsored by Darren Fisher, MP for Dartmouth-Coal Harbour) proposes development and implementation of a national strategy to promote the safe disposal of lamps containing mercury.

(Brett Ruskin/CBC)

It suggests the Minister of the Environment develop and implement a national strategy for the safe disposal of mercury-containing lamps in co-operation with provinces, territories, environmental groups and industry; and includes:
  • national standards for the disposal of such lamps;
  • guidelines for disposal facilities; and
  • a plan for promoting public awareness of the importance of safe disposal.
Take Back the Light is designed to ensure fluorescent lights and bulbs are properly managed at end-of-life, and is committed to supporting Bill C-238.
Next step: Bill C-238 will go to Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development for further review, before the Report Stage and going back to the House of Commons for third reading.
